Eligibility / General information
Why are there only 100 Work and Holiday visas each year?
The Malaysian and Australian Governments have reciprocal arrangements whereby each country currently offers a maximum of 100 Work and Holiday visas per programme year to citizens of both countries.
Once Australia has granted 100 Work and Holiday visas to Malaysian citizens for the program year, no more can be granted until the following programme year. A program year runs from 1 July of the current year, to 30 June of the following year.
What if I miss out? Is there a waiting list for next year?
We do not maintain a waiting list as interest and demand for the Work and Holiday visa is very high.
The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur will update its website if further appointments to lodge an application for a Work and Holiday visa become available during the current programme year.
Can I apply for a Work and Holiday visa if I’m not a Malaysian citizen?
The Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur processes Work and Holiday visa applications for Malaysian citizens only.
However, the Australian Government has similar arrangements with other countries and therefore you may be eligible if you are a citizen of another participating country.

What are the educational requirements for Malaysia?
In order to be eligible for a Work and Holiday visa you must, at the time of lodging the application hold a tertiary qualification or have completed at least two years of undergraduate study.
You will not be eligible if you only hold a Diploma or an Advanced Diploma.
Where do I get the letter of Government Support?
In Malaysia the letter of Government support is the Malaysian Certificate of Good Conduct (CGC). You must submit the original CGC as part of your application – if you do not do so, your application will be refused.
The Malaysian CGC is issued by the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and can only be applied for online via the e-Consular link on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website at: www.kln.gov.my

What methods of payment do you accept?
To pay for the Visa Application Charge you can use:
- Cash (in Malaysian Ringgit only)
- Bank draft
- Credit card (in Australian Dollars – to do this, fill in the payment section of the application form)
Debit cards and personal cheques are not accepted.
Make sure you have enough money to pay for the Visa Application Charge as unpaid applications are deemed invalid.
What if I don’t have all the documents?
The supporting documents are required to help assess if you have met the criteria for the Work and Holiday visa. If you do not submit all the necessary supporting documents, your visa application will be decided on the information you have provided. If you are assessed as not meeting the criteria then your application will be refused.
Should I do my medicals before I lodge my application?
You are not required to undertake your medicals prior to lodging your application, normally a case officer will direct you to complete these during the processing of the visa.

Please note that if you complete your medicals but you are not successful in having a visa granted for any reason (including not being able to secure an appointment) you will not be eligible for a refund of any kind. Pre-lodgement medicals are done so at the applicant’s risk.
Please ensure that you advise VFS at the time of your appointment (if you are successful in obtaining an appointment) if you have already completed the health checks.
My passport will expire when I intend to be in Australia. What should I do?
It is recommended that you travel with a passport that is valid for the duration of your intended stay in Australia. If you get a new passport before you travel to Australia, you should notify us to update your passport details. How to lodge a Work and Holiday visa application
How do I get an appointment to lodge my application?
The only way to make an appointment to lodge a Work and Holiday visa application will be to make an appointment online via the Australian Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) website.
Please note that you cannot make an appointment through the VFS counter, by telephone or by email. Appointments can only be made online using the link below.

Where do I go to lodge my application?
Once you have completed your visa application form and have all your supporting documents, you will need to make an appointment to lodge your visa application in person at the Australian Visa Application Centre (VFS Global).

Can someone else submit my application on my behalf?
No, the applicant must lodge their application in person at the Australian Visa Application Centre (VFS Global). This is because the applicant will need to provide their biometrics (i.e. fingerprints and a facial photograph) when they lodge their application.

I was asked to undergo health checks and did them straight away, so why hasn’t my application been decided yet?
When you undertake a medical check at a panel doctor in Malaysia, the results of those checks will be sent electronically to Australia for assessment by an Australian Government approved medical officer at the Health Operations Centre (HOC). Depending on HOC’s workloads and priorities, a medical officer may not look at your medical results straight away.
Moreover, the medical officer may need to request further medical information from you before they can decide whether or not you meet the health requirement. Therefore, the Australian High Commission is unlikely to know the outcome of your health checks for at least one to two weeks after you have undertaken them in Malaysia.
How long do I have to wait for a decision to be made?
That depends on a number of things and no definite time frame can be given. If you have provided all the required documents and your application is to proceed, you can expect to be invited within two weeks of lodgement to undertake a medical examination.
You will be given 28 days to undertake those checks or provide evidence that you have made an appointment to undertake those checks. However, the quicker you undertake the medical checks, the quicker your application can be decided!
Do I need a visa label?
No. You do not need a visa label in your passport to travel to Australia. If you are granted a visa, you will be provided with a letter that outlines the visa validity, period of stay and conditions by which you must abide. It is recommended that you keep this grant letter with you when you travel to Australia for your information.

How long is my Work and Holiday visa valid for?
The Work and Holiday visa is valid for 12 months from the date of grant with a stay period of 12 months. You must enter Australia before the visa end date and the 12 month stay starts on your first entry to Australia when you use the visa. During this time you can enter and exit Australia on multiple occasions. This information will be provided in your grant letter.
My passport has been lost/stolen or I’ve been issued with a new passport. What should I do?
If you have been issued with a new passport since your visa was granted, you will need to notify us before you can travel. Otherwise you may face delays at the airport. To advise us of a change in passport details you must complete Form 929. Scan and attach this form with a copy of the bio-data page of both your new and old passport and email the images to email@example.com with a request for your passport details to be updated.
