AUSTRALIA SUPPORTS THE MELAKA ART AND PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL

The Australia-Malaysia Institute (AMI) and the Australian High Commission are proud to support the Melaka Art and Performance Festival (MAP Fest), which will take place from 26 to 28 November 2010 at the historic St Paul’s Hill, Melaka.

MAP Fest serves as a platform for artistic and cultural exchange between Australia and Malaysia against the backdrop of Melaka’s rich cultural heritage. The festival also presents an opportunity for independent artists and performers from Australia, Malaysia and South East Asia to showcase their work across a range of art forms including music, dance, drama and photography.

MAP Fest will build on Melaka’s reputation as a cultural hub and as a city embracing contemporary arts alongside heritage.

MAP Fest was established with the help of Melbourne-based Mr Tony Yap, who is the founding Creative Director. Born in Melaka, Mr Yap is the Artistic Director of Tony Yap Company (TYC), an interdisciplinary performing arts company. TYC is working in partnership with the AMI, the Australian High Commission and Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) on this year’s MAP Fest. Australian dancers from the company will be performing at the festival.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr Miles Kupa, said the Festival “was a wonderful opportunity for Malaysian audiences to be exposed to Australia’s vibrant arts scene. It would also be an opportunity for Malaysian and Australian artists to collaborate.”
