Australian High Commission to Malaysia supports the inaugural UN International Day of the Girl Child

The Australian High Commission to Malaysia supports the inaugural UN International Day of the Girl Child, which was observed on 11 October 2012. The day provides an opportunity to promote girls’ rights, highlight inequalities between girls and boys, and to address the various forms of discrimination and abuse suffered by girls around the globe.

To highlight Australia’s commitment to advancing the rights of girls, HE Ms Penny Williams, Australia’s Global Ambassador for Women and Girls, has recorded a video message. The Australian High Commission invites you to view the message via the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade YouTube channel or at the Department’s Women and Girls homepage.

In Australia, the launch of the International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated at an event at Parliament House on 10 October at which the Prime Minister spoke. The text of the Prime Minister’s speech is accessible here.
